Introduction
Martial Arts can be many things to many people. It
is a safe assumption that the primary reason for beginning training in any
martial art will vary from practitioner to practitioner, regardless of style,
age, or any other similarity or difference. Certainly, some motivations for
study will arise more frequently than others; for example, self-defense, curious
interest, and exercise are often cited as the primary reasons for which
individuals have taken up the martial arts. However, despite whatever various
motivations spur a new student to become a practitioner of the martial arts,
once training has progressed the student will begin to assess the balance
between to what lengths their motivation drives them and the degree to which
they have sacrificed themselves. It is at this time that every student will
evaluate what they have acquired to date and what prospects for further
advancement lay ahead of them.
Modern martial arts have developed a characteristic
that has become both its defining feature and its fatal flaw. In these modern
systems, when students begin to assess what they have acquired and what they
stand to gain from their chosen martial art, they are nearly invariably
disappointed and discouraged. Contemporary martial art studios and schools are
run as commercial institutions, focused primarily on the bottom line. To an
extent, this is an understandable necessity, but problems arise when this
necessity is given inordinate priority, as is tragically too often the case.
Students are seen as customers whose sole purpose is to ensure the financial
security of the school while being passed through a systematic curriculum. A
frequently cited metaphor for these types of schools is “Black Belt Factories”
and this comparison speaks volumes to the heart of the issue. Students will
never feel the true sense of fulfillment that comes from well-guided study of
martial arts in a modern martial arts institution, and when they weigh the value
of what they have acquired against what they have given, the scale is always
tipped against them.
Koguryo Martial Arts actively employs a traditional
approach to teaching martial arts. We seek to embody the higher ideals of
instruction and endeavor to satisfy each student’s respective wants and needs.
Our philosophy is that each and every student becomes a member of our extended
family the moment they decide to join our schools. No one is overlooked and
each student’s progress is the shared goal of his or her teachers and fellow
students. In this environment, the measure of what a student gains from
training is always at least equivalent to what effort each student puts into his
or her study. Our goal is to assist each student through a process of personal
improvement based on the traditional study of martial arts.
